Spiritual Direction
January 05, 2022
What is spiritual direction? William Barry and William Connolly define spiritual direction in their book, The Practice of Spiritual Direction: “Help given by one Christian to another, which enables that person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship.”
Spiritual direction may be provided by spiritual friends, spiritual guides, or soul companions. Some have received spiritual direction from “midwives of the soul.” Spiritual direction is offered by those who have been taught and certified as well as by some who have received no formal training. Authentic spiritual direction defers to the Holy Spirit, the ultimate source of all godly prompting.
Rev. Roger Short maintains a directory of Certified Spiritual Directors.
